About True West
True West was conceived in 1990 out of
the overwhelming popularity of the classic 1940’s vintage Wallace China patterns that fell under the "umbrella" of Westward Ho Barbecue Ware. The original Rodeo Pattern, Boots & Saddle,
and Longhorn, among other patterns, were avidly snapped up by collectors at some pretty steep prices. This created a demand for a reproduction that could be used everyday.
To quote from one of the original brochures on Barbecue Ware: "Typically Western Rodeo dinnerware is designed by one of America’s outstanding Cowboy artists, Till Goodan. The background is buckskin color with bucking broncos, cowboys and action roundup scenes in saddle brown and two colors hand decorated. Unusual continuous border trim is authentic cattle brands of famous ranches. NO brands repeated. The ware is of the highest quality vitrified china, hotel weight, and due to extreme durability is particularly suited for outdoor barbecue use."
And so it began again; we started out by reproducing the Rodeo Pattern first, as faithfully as possible, and made in the U.S.A. to insure the quality required. With the generosity and licensing support of Betty Goodan Andrews, Till's daughter, we were able to continue on with Boots & Saddle, Longhorn, and the never-before produced Christmas Pattern which incorporated Goodan’s personal Christmas card art.
Mark Clay is our owner. Growing up on his family’s cotton farm, Mark never imagined his talents would take him around the world as Creative Director for Polo Ralph Lauren Home Collection. But his heart was in the Lone Star State, where he now bases his prominent interior design firm in Dallas, Mark Clay Designs.
Pat Turner is our Director of Sales & Marketing, a Native Texan, and a longtime design and marketing consultant to True West before taking over the day-to-day operations in 2001. Pat, along with her husband Rick, now run the office and shipping operations from their hometown, Royse City, Texas.
